Math Matters! Math at School and Home
We will be working to build our math skills in various ways this year.
* First we need to increase number sense. This means breaking down what we know about numbers so that we understan each number and what it means. We will "decompose" or break down number to understand that they can be stated in different ways...
Example 5=3+2 but it can also be stated as 7-2
It can be described in terms such as greater than or less than another number
*We will work on Math Fluency as well.
This means that we begin to develop our speed and accuracy in recall, so that we have increased "automatic" correct responses to basic facts. We accomplish this through daily Math "Sprints" where we have a timed practice of the same 20 facts each day of the week, thus increasing our skill by the end of the week to an accurate response in 2 minutes. At school we will practice throughout the day with some fun quick response opportunities.
*Math Homework is Called Math 4 Today. It is a mixed practice sheet. It should be completed 1 row per evening and turned in on Friday. We will go over it together on Friday to review and explain any skills that may have been difficult or confusing.
